This practice is open to all, regardless of flexibility or experience. Please bring a yoga mat if you have one (a few spares are available).
About the class
This is yoga as an embodied spiritual practice, for anyone drawn to yoga as a path of inner exploration.
In this class, we use:
- Physical practice (asana)
- Breath practice (pranayama)
- Chanting (mantra)
- Meditation
As we move, our centre of gravity shifts from the mind into the body. Restorative postures allow a deep releasing of tension from the body. Strenuous parts of the practice strengthen the body and mind, and allow us to meet and move through mental resistance. Through bringing awareness to each movement and posture, the physical practice becomes a moving meditation.
As we practice with the breath, we untie knots of tension in our breathing, settling our nervous system and releasing stress. The breath carries us through the physical practice, never divorced from the movements we make - bringing energy and awareness as we move through both challenging and restorative sequences.
As we chant mantras, we bring harmony to the body and mind, allowing the fluctuations of attention to calm, gathering energy into our centre.
As we meditate in stillness, we rest back into an intimacy with our present moment, embodied experience, and allow our moment-to-moment experience of being alive to flow unimpeded by habits of reactivity and distraction.
Through these powerful practices, the body, the heart and the mind soften and open, and we rest back into awareness - the ground of our being. From this spacious, steady ground, everything can be witnessed - the stillness of the body at rest, as well as the physical challenge of intense movements or spicy stretches.
This is a meditative yoga class, in which each asana (physical shape), and each movement, become a meditation posture - a place in which to cultivate a bright, sensitive present moment awareness.
